So… this is the average cost per person or per family? Because from these photos it’s obvious that the average family size is very different…

Bosnian family spends around 750 -800 KM – 400 euro or 590 $ per month

total bullshit, too less beer on the germans’ table :-) )

  • jdmeaux

NOW if this would have been a direct comparison of the SAME food items, then we would have seen a smaller difference.

  • German_2

Nonsense, an *average* German family does not drink that much vodka!

  • kaszu

I live with my fiance in Warsaw (Poland) and we spend about $200 monthly on food. $151 for average family? I don’t think it’s possible.

Terrible post, every picture has different products and amounts, there is no way you can compare the cost region by region. Is there any useful information on the internet anymore?

  • Jimmy

Excellent comparisons, just some idiot posters making inane comments. This is the *average* dollar value for a family in those places. Figures are from the United Nations amongst others. Look at what people eat, this is their average consumption, number of loaves they eat, pasta, veggies, meat and drinks. In Butan their diet is meat free (only vegetables) while in Germany they have much fewer veggies but a lot of meat. Also they drink a lot of beer in Germany but virtually none in Butan.

On Germany, you can allways get a good name…
    gruss orkan.

OMG, looking at the California diet is so not like ours. We eat really healthy, mostly veggies and non-GMO/organic sustainable meats. I suppose the family expressed could be considered “average” but honestly there are so many different diets in California I’m not sure how this family is supposed to represent all of us. I like the idea of this website and post, but really, it would be far to difficult to truly post what the average person/family spends. Just the two of us eating incredibly healthy here in California spend about $400 a month minimum. That doesn’t include alcohol either, we live in “Wine Country” so if we counted the wine and alcohol too, it would put us double that; and closer to $800 a month. I know what people think about alcoholism, so just to put that into perspective for us, the average bottle of wine my boyfriend buys who is a sommelier is $60.

Oh and guys, my quotes are for 2 people. So I agree that we should be breaking this down also by person not family estimates.

These are costs for one week, but not necessary representive of what was consumed in one week. Here is the photoessay published by Time: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1626519,00.html
